The
St. George Soccer Association had originally intended to redevelop Barton
Park but with the plans for the relocation of Kogarah golf course and the
creation of a Technology Park, Cahill Park was viewed as a more feasible option
by St. George Soccer. To R2K, Cahill Park seemed to offer few advantages over
Barton Park. Cahill Parks main advantage was its close proximity to Wolli
Creek Railway Station. Other than this, Barton Park
seemed a more logical and realistic redevelopment.
In
November, Rockdale Council rejected the proposed redevelopment of Cahill Park.
There was no official press release by Rockdale Council, but it is rumoured that
Rockdale Council wanted to keep Cahill Park for the purposes of its new suburb
Cahill. Whether Cahill Park will continue as a recreational area or
become a victim of high-rise development remains to be seen.
