R2K aims to capture mood for change

R2K (Return to Kogarah) is hoping for good showing in the St.George Leagues Club elections which commence this week.
The R2K group is running three candidates against the incumbent Directors in order to improve the facilities at the St.George Leagues Club and to ensure that the Dragons remain at OKI Jubilee Stadium for 50% of NRL home games.
R2K President Lachlan McLean, who is a Board candidate along with Graeme Fleming and Paul Blair, believes that there is a mood for change amongst Leagues Club members.
“We’ve spoken to many members during the past few weeks and there is definitely a view that the Leagues Club needs to be revitalised and that it’s time for a change at Board level,” said McLean.
‘It’s just a matter of convincing those members that their vote is important and to encourage them to attend the Club following the Easter weekend.”
The St.George Board election has attracted plenty of interest in the Fairfax press over the weekend, with two articles which featured on the future of the Dragons’ joint venture and the state of St.George Leagues Club.
“There has been a lot of recent speculation about the future of the Dragons’ joint venture, but I can assure you that R2K is supportive of the Dragons’ ongoing link to the Illawarra junior nursery,’ said McLean.
“As always, we are zealous about keeping NRL matches in the St.George District and we think it’s detrimental to the St.George Leagues Club that they have lost five of their biggest trading days this year with the matches shifted to ANZ Stadium at Homebush.”
Fellow R2K candidate Graeme Fleming is encouraged by the support he is gaining from the local community and believes that the Dragons’ lack of recent success is part of the reason.
“St.George members should not ask for premiership success, they should demand premiership success from their current Directors,” said Fleming.
Fleming’s Father, the late John Fleming, was the CEO of the St.George Dragons when they won our last premiership in 1979 and when they won their last silverware – the Panasonic Cup in 1988.
He was also the first Manager of the NSW State of Origin team and was Manager of the 1986 Kangaroos team which became known as the “Unbeatables”.
The St.George Board election commences on Easter Monday and voting continues on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Members can vote each day from 10 am to 8pm.
