R2K hosts Jubilee support night at Kogarah Inn Hotel

29 October 2007

R2K held a Jubilee Stadium Support Night at Kogarah Inn Hotel on Saturday to stimulate further discussion on the Dragons’ decision to relocate to Homebush in 2008.

R2K President Lachlan McLean and Vice-President James Young gave well received speeches that helped to clarify OKI Jubilee Stadium’s current predicament and reaffirmed that R2K will run three candidates for the St.George Leagues Club Board elections in 2008.

Lachlan McLean drew attention to the fact that the St.George District has been starved of NRL matches since St.George joined with Illawarra in 1999.

“At the end of the 2008 season, the St.George District will have hosted less than 25% of Dragons’ home games since the formation of the joint venture,” McLean said.

“Unfortunately, Kogarah will have only hosted 30 out of a possible 122 premiership home games, while WIN Stadium will have hosted 65 out of 122 premiership home games. That’s less than 25% for Kogarah and over 53% for WIN Stadium.”

James Young inspired attendees not to tolerate the Dragons’ decision to move to Homebush in Rugby League’s Centenary Year while stating that St.George supporters should demand premiership success from the Dragons’ current administration after a 28 year drought.

Compered by 2SER’s Robert Corra, the Support Night allowed attendees to ask several questions of the R2K representatives.

The majority of the questions related to the following issues:

  • OKI Jubilee Stadium upgrade
  • St.George Leagues Club Election process
  • R2K’s position on the recognition of St.George history within the joint venture relationship.
  • How supporters can assist with the R2K campaign
  • R2K media and campaign strategy

R2K thanks those who attended the event and those who purchased merchandise, bought raffle tickets and made donations. In addition, R2K would like to thank the Kogarah Hotel for their wonderful hospitality and Robert Corra for his work as Master of Ceremonies.

The night was a positive for R2K and it is pleasing that supporters are enthusiastic about making the Dragons accountable for their Homebush decision and are motivated by the prospect of R2K candidates gaining representation on the St.George Board.

The R2K committee will begin planning a series of functions in the lead up to March 2008.

* The statistics quoted in relation to the 122 Dragons’ home games don’t include the 2005 home-final at WIN Stadium or the 2006 & 2007 significant pre-season feature matches at WIN Stadium.
