Dragons record lowest Sydney home crowd
18 May 2008
The Dragons last night recorded their lowest home game attendance in Sydney since the formation of the St.George-Illawarra Joint Venture in 1999.
Only 6,881 patrons visited ANZ Stadium to witness the Dragons’ credible 36-12 victory against a vastly under-strength Melbourne Storm team.
ANZ Stadium has a capacity of 83,500 and therefore the Dragons’ home game utilised just over 8% of the Stadium’s seating capacity.
It is the St.George-Illawarra Dragons’ second lowest attendance at a home game, with only Wollongong recording a lower crowd of 6,024 against North Queensland in 2000.
Not since the Dragons defeated Penrith at the SFS in 2001 in front of 7,147 supporters have St.George-Illawarra attracted fewer supporters in Sydney.
The attendance at Saturday’s match is the sixth lowest NRL crowd since ANZ Stadium opened in 1999.
