National Trust interested in OKI Jubilee Stadium
28 October 2007
R2K (Return to Kogarah) is pleased to announce that the National Trust of Australia (NSW) are considering adding Kogarah’s OKI Jubilee Stadium to its Register of locations in NSW that have significance to the community and should be kept and conserved for future generations.
The Trust are concentrating this year during their annual Heritage Festival on an "Our Place" theme and sporting heritage will be one of the major themes.
The Trust is mindful that the NRL is celebrating its Centenary in 2008 and are therefore considering the listing of Jubilee Oval on the Trust Register.
Deputy Conservation Director Graham Quint informed R2K that he has been taking a keen interest in the media reports on the controversial decision to move games from OKI Jubilee Stadium to Telstra Stadium.
The National Trust is a community based heritage conservation organisation formed in 1945.
As a community organisation, the National Trust listings have no legal implication but have considerable influence in the media and with community perceptions.
While OKI Jubilee Stadium is already a heritage item, R2K supports its listing in the Register as it would be an authoritative statement on the cultural significance of the Dragons’ spiritual home.
R2K will assist OKI Jubilee Stadium’s case for classification by providing a brief history of the venue to the Trust and through providing information that highlights the social significance of the site.
